What skills will be needed in a future in which biological and lifestyle data are tracked constantly and passively?
Today, many of us are thinking more carefully about how, when and why we share mobility and location data or, to the degree that we have any control over it, data about our purchasing practices. Over the next decade, the kinds of biological and lifestyle data that we will be generating will be more personal and intimate than anything we’ve ever created without effort in the past. We will be confronted with new questions and new challenges about how we control the permissions to access information about our bodies as well as our health conditions and risks. We will need new skills and tools to secure the high-granularity data streaming from our bodies and lifestyles. And we’ll need to be able to better evaluate the tradeoffs between relinquishing very personal data and the convenience that comes with the use of innovative, embedded technologies.
How do you work to engage physicians to develop the next generation of clinical leaders?
In a decade, more of medial discovery, diagnosis, and treatments will be shaped by a powerful combination of algorithms and human intuition and judgment. Next generation clinical leaders will need to embrace and integrate sophisticated technologies such as AI and machine learning, and improve their ability to derive meaning from algorithmic-run systems. Most importantly, next generation leaders in health will need to hone their narrative skills. The human traits of storytelling and empathic listening will remain critical in the delivery of high-quality patient care and the cultivation of inviting and sustaining workplaces. To accomplish this, Institute for the Future encourages physicians and health systems in general to begin to experiment with emerging technologies, learning how to design the optimal partnership between human capabilities and the capabilities of machine-learned systems.

Do you have a pet? If so, tell me about it.
In my early 20s, I adopted a black lab named Scout. She and I were our own little family. Eventually, I got married and had children and Scout became a family dog. We were all devastated when she died a few years ago. Recently, however, a new dog has come into our life. I wasn’t sure that another dog could ever be as great as my beloved Scout, but Rebel has reminded me how much love dogs bring into a home. We feel really lucky that she found us.
What one event in your childhood had the greatest effect on your life?
My mother died when I was a teenager. This event has shaped all aspects of my life, including how I conduct research on the future of healthcare. I know firsthand that no matter how good the technological tools may become in the future, patients will still want health care professionals who authentically and empathetically partner with them on their health journeys.I have never forgotten the nurses who cared so wholeheartedly for my mom, nor have I forgotten the clinicians who did not show any empathy for her or her young family during this difficult time.
